FAQ

What is the length of an apprenticeship as an automotive mechanic?

An automotive mechanic apprenticeship takes around three years to complete. This includes two years at school and two years working as an apprentice. The first year teaches you all aspects, from theory to practical skills and safety procedures. You'll also learn how tools can be used safely and efficiently during this year. After the first year, a second year will be spent on-thejob training. This year you'll get experience in different trades. You will have the opportunity for formal training during these years.

The final year of the program is spent gaining qualifications and becoming certified in the field. These include NVQs (National Vocational Qualifications), which are awarded after passing exams covering specific topics within the industry. The HNCs (Higher National Certificates), on the other hand, cover general subjects like customer service and management. For those interested in pursuing certain trades, City & Guilds certificates are available.

Is it worth becoming a mechanic?

The answer to this question will depend on your goals for life. If you are looking for financial gain, then yes. However, if purpose and meaning are what you seek, then no.

If you don’t possess any mechanics skills, you won’t be able to do it. You won't become rich from it. You won't become famous. It's unlikely that it will change your life.

You would need to spend years learning how to do everything properly. This would mean that you would have to pay someone else for your car's repair. This is why most people don’t bother. They find something better.

To sum up, if you want to earn lots of money then go ahead. If you are looking for a fulfilling life, however, then stay clear of the mechanics' industry.

You might choose to take a different route. This is where you might be interested in becoming a technician.

This is where you use your technical skills to support other workers. Technicians could benefit from your technical expertise to solve problems or teach new techniques.

Another option is to become a service advisor. Here, you'll provide advice and assistance to customers when they bring their cars to a garage.

You'll need to have excellent communication skills because you'll spend most of your time talking to customers and other employees. You will need to be able and willing travel for work, making it more difficult to commute.

Take classes at community colleges or universities if you're interested to work in automotive. Many schools have programs that are specifically tailored for students who are interested in automotive sales, repair, and customer service.

You should choose to study mechanical engineering if you want to get a degree. You can get your bachelor's degree in as little as four years.

Many companies will also hire graduates right out of school. Therefore, it is a good idea to look for employment while still pursuing part-time studies.

After you have completed your education, you will likely need some training to be able to work as an automotive technician.

This means that you will need to pass tests such as the Automotive Excellence (ASE) certification exam. This test covers topics including engine maintenance, brakes, steering systems, suspension, and more.

What kind of car mechanic jobs exists?

There are three main areas of employment for car mechanics:

  • Automotive repair shops
  • Dealerships
  • Independent garages

Automotive repair shops

This is the place most people begin to consider becoming mechanics. It's also the easiest way you can get started. Either work for someone else's shop or you can start your own.

If you decide to work at a shop, you'll need to apply to join a union. Once accepted into the union you will be trained by the union.

Once the training is completed, you can start working.

Registering with the government is required if you intend to open a garage. After you register, you will be required to meet specific standards.

You will receive a license to run your garage once you have registered.

You can sell spare parts or do minor repairs with your license. It won't permit you to fix serious engine problems.

In addition to selling spare parts, you'll also be expected to offer advice and guidance to customers.

Dealership jobs

Many dealerships have mechanics who are experts in one particular area. For instance, they may only be qualified to fix brakes or change tires.

Some dealerships have the option to hire general mechanics who can take care of all aspects.

Some positions require that applicants complete training before they can be allowed to work. Employers can then choose the best candidates for their job.

Some dealerships hire students straight out of college. These graduates already know the basics of mechanical engineering and therefore have no problem learning about cars.

Independent garages

Independent garages don’t have to be associated with any particular dealer. Instead, they tend to focus on providing high-quality service.

Because independent garages aren't affiliated with any company, they can afford to pay higher wages. As a result, these jobs are generally better paid than those at dealerships.

But this doesn't mean that independent garages are necessarily better places to work. Many business owners prefer to own their businesses and not delegate the responsibility to others.

This could lead to you working long hours with little control over your day.

It is also possible to expect lower wages than you would if working at a dealer.

It's possible to switch between jobs. To work at a dealership you will need to contact your employer to see if he is open to the idea of hiring you.

Alternativly, you can apply directly to the garage owner if you are interested in working at an independent garage.

The bad news? Finding a new position isn't always easy. There are many other factors that can influence your earnings.

For example, the type of vehicle you repair and whether you charge extra for labor.
