You can also become a service advisor. You will offer assistance and advice to customers when they bring cars to a garage.

What jobs are available for car mechanics?

There are three main areas of employment for car mechanics:

  • Automotive repair shops
  • Dealerships
  • Independent garages

Automotive repair shops

Most people think of this as the first step to becoming a mechanic. It's the easiest way for most people to get started. You can either work in a shop run by someone else, or start your business.

If you are interested in working at a shop you will need to apply for membership to a union. Once accepted into the union you will be trained by the union.

You'll be ready for work once you have completed the training.

Registering with the government is required if you intend to open a garage. Once you have registered, certain standards will be enforced.

After you have registered, you will be issued a license to operate your garage.

Your license allows for minor repairs and spare parts sales. It will not allow you to repair major engine problems.

Apart from selling spare parts, customers will also expect you to provide guidance and advice.

Dealership jobs

Most dealerships employ mechanics who can specialize in a particular area of the car. They may be trained to replace or repair tires, or they may specialize in brakes.

Some dealers also have general mechanics that can handle all aspects.

These positions often require applicants to undergo specific training before being allowed to work. Employers can then choose the best candidates for their job.

Some dealerships will even hire graduates right out of university. These graduates are familiar with the fundamentals of mechanical engineering so they can easily learn about cars.

Independent garages

Independent garages aren't associated with any particular dealership. Instead, they focus on high-quality customer service.

Because independent garages aren't affiliated with any company, they can afford to pay higher wages. Because these jobs don't have to be associated with any company, they can generally offer better wages than dealerships.

But this doesn't mean that independent garages are necessarily better places to work. Many owners prefer to run their businesses themselves rather than delegate responsibility to employees.

You may find yourself working for long hours and not having control over the day.

Additionally, you should expect to earn lower wages if employed by a dealership.

It's possible to switch between jobs. It is possible to switch between different types of jobs if your current employer would prefer you to work at a dealer.

Or, if your dream is to work for an independent garage you can contact the owner directly.

The bad news? Finding a new position isn't always easy. There are many factors that affect how much you make.

For example, the type of vehicle you repair and whether you charge extra for labor.

Is it easy to get a job as an automotive mechanic?

Yes, it's possible. Many garages advertise their vacancies online, and many people apply just because they think it might be fun. If you want to get your foot in the door, you should try applying for a few places and see if they accept student applications. Another option is to ask family members and friends if anyone works in this industry. They might be willing to recommend someone.

How long is an apprenticeship for an automotive mechanic?

The apprenticeship to become an automotive mechanic takes about three years. The apprenticeship includes two years studying at school and two more as an apprentice. The first year is dedicated to learning the theory and practical skills of the trade. During this time, you'll also learn how to use tools safely and efficiently. After the completion of the first year, you will spend another year on the job training. Here you'll gain valuable experience in different trades. These periods will also give you the chance to take formal courses.

The last year of the program is dedicated to gaining certification and qualifications in the field. These include NVQs (National Vocational Qualifications), which are awarded after passing exams covering specific topics within the industry. You can also get HNCs (Higher National Certificates), that cover subjects such as customer service, business administration, management, and business administration. For those interested in pursuing certain trades, City & Guilds certificates are available.

What is the distinction between a mechanic or an automotive technician?

The two are similar but not identical. The mechanic fixes cars while the technician maintains them.

A mechanic should be able to do simple tasks quickly and have good manual dexterity. A mechanic should also be able accurately diagnose and repair problems.

An automotive technician needs to be more technically skilled than a mechanic. They must be able to read blueprints and use tools such as drills and wrenches.

They must also be able perform complex procedures safely. They should also be familiarized with the different types of engines as well as electrical systems.

They must also be able to understand how various parts interact with each other.

As a result, mechanics typically make less than technicians. There are many job opportunities in both.

How To

How to be an Automotive Technician

An automotive technician provides repair services and maintenance to vehicles. He/she works in car dealerships as well as auto shops, garages, and service centers. He/she works with customers to repair their cars and trucks, ATVs or snowmobiles. An automotive technician must have the ability to quickly diagnose and fix problems.

A person who wants to work as an automotive technician should first obtain an associate degree from a vocational school. After completing this program, he/she must pass the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification exam. ASE stands in for American Society of Mechanical Engineers. There are two sections to the ASE certification test. The first section tests for mechanical knowledge, the second for practical skills. To pass the test you must go to one of the authorized testing facilities. These testing sites can be found online and through your local dealer.

A candidate must pass the state exam after passing the test to become an automotive technician. This process varies depending on where the applicant lives. Some states require that candidates attend training courses, while others permit them to learn independently. In addition, some states license technicians immediately after they receive their license, while others wait until they have completed at least six months of employment as an automotive technician.

An applicant should apply to a local auto shop in order to start their career as an automotive technician. Once hired, most new employees start out working as apprentices. Apprenticeship programs typically last three to four years. A student will learn to repair basic things like changing oil, adjusting brakes or replacing tires. They also learn how spark plugs are cleaned and inspect engine compartments. Some students will learn advanced repair techniques, such as changing shocks, installing air filters, and replacing engines. Many schools offer classes during regular hours. Some schools also offer evening classes, if necessary.

After completing an apprenticeship, a student becomes a journeyman. Journeymen spend typically four to five years learning to install major systems such as transmissions and differentials, steering gear, suspensions and drive shafts. They also learn to perform complex repairs, such as remanufacturing engines, rebuilding transmissions, and troubleshooting electrical components. Employers prefer to hire journeymen as they are familiar with the job and can anticipate customer needs.

After passing the exams, candidates may be eligible to open their own shop if they pass all requirements. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics (2010), almost 1.7million automotive mechanic jobs were on the market. This number is expected to increase by 18% between 2009 and 2020. When a candidate plans to open his/her own shop he/she should be ready to invest thousands of dollars in equipment.

The salary of an automotive technician will depend on many factors including where you live, your education level, experience and the type of employer. An average salary for a jobless individual is $20,000 per annum. Someone with only a high school diploma could earn around $21,000 per year. A bachelor's degree is equivalent to approximately $24,000 annually. A technician with a bachelor's degree earned approximately $27,000 annually. Master's degree holders make around $32,000 annually. A common trend is for salary increases to occur so a professional making less than $30,000 can reasonably expect to be earning $40,000 or more within a few years.
