FAQ

How long does a good mechanic take?

You need to have years of experience and practice before you can become a master mechanic. Working under the guidance of a professional mechanic is the best way to learn how repair cars.

You will be required to spend time at a car garage learning as much as you can about cars. Mechanical engineering books will be required to learn about mechanics and design.

Additionally, you will need to attend an auto school.

It is important to get started early. Do not wait to learn automotive technology. Start studying automotive technology now to become a mechanic.

Is it important which college I go?

It's not true. In terms of getting into the auto industry, there is no distinction between colleges. There are some schools that offer more specific programs than others.

Can I work as an auto mechanic without a degree? Do I have to study part-time?

Although it's not mandatory, a degree can help. Employers are more likely to hire candidates who have completed a complete degree. It shows you are dedicated and have worked hard to achieve your goals.

This doesn't necessarily mean you can't continue to work while studying. Many universities permit students to take courses during the summer holidays, and then finish their studies in the fall. Others allow students to study part-time all year.

Is it worthwhile to become a mechanic?

The answer to that question depends on what your life purpose is. If you're looking for money, then it's true. But, if there are meaning and purpose in your life, then it's not.

If you don't have any mechanics skills, then there's no point getting into it because you'll just end up wasting time. You won't become rich from it. It won't make your name famous. It is unlikely that your life will change.

You would need to spend years learning how to do everything properly. Then you'd still have to pay someone else to fix your car when it breaks down. It's the reason most people don't bother. They find something better.

Let's sum it up: If you want to make a lot of money, then do so. But if you want to live a meaningful life, stay away from the mechanic's industry.

How To

How to become an Automotive Technician

A technician who works on vehicles is an automotive technician. He/she can be found at auto shops, garages and service centers. Customers can rely on him/her to fix their cars, trucks and motorcycles. An automotive technician must be capable of diagnosing problems and making repairs safely, accurately and efficiently.

If you want to be an automotive technician, you need an associate degree from vocational school. After completing this program, he/she will need to pass the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence's (ASE) certification exam. ASE stands as American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The ASE certification test consists two sections. One section tests knowledge of mechanical components, while the other section tests skills in practical areas. To pass the test you must go to one of the authorized testing facilities. You can find these locations online or through your local automobile dealer.

After passing the test, a candidate must pass a state examination before becoming licensed as an automotive technician. This process varies depending on where the applicant lives. Some states require that applicants attend a training class, while others allow them freedom to study at their own pace. Some states issue licenses to technicians as soon as they get their license. Others wait until they have worked at least six months as an automotive technician.

An applicant should apply to a local auto shop in order to start their career as an automotive technician. Most new employees work as apprentices after they have been hired. Apprenticeships last for three years. This is when a student can learn how to do basic repairs such as changing oil, adjusting brakes and replacing tires. Advanced repairs can be done by some students, including replacing shocks, installing air filters and repairing engines. Schools offer classes during business hours. Some schools also offer evening classes, if necessary.

Once a student completes his/her apprenticeship, he/she becomes a journeyman. Journeymen can spend up to five years learning how major systems work, including transmissions, differentials. They also learn how to adjust steering gear and suspensions. They also learn to perform complex repairs, such as remanufacturing engines, rebuilding transmissions, and troubleshooting electrical components. Many employers prefer hiring journeymen because they know the job well and understand what the customer expects.

A candidate who passes all the necessary exams and gets a license might be interested in opening his/her own business. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that there were nearly 1.7 million jobs available for automotive mechanics in 2010. This number is expected to increase by 18% between 2009 and 2020. A candidate who plans to open a shop should expect to spend many thousands of dollars on equipment and supplies.

The salary for an automotive technician depends on several factors, including the type of employer, location, education level, and experience. On average, a jobless person could expect to earn $20,000 annually. A high school diploma is all that's required to earn approximately $21,000 annually. Those with an associate's degree earned approximately $24,000 per year. Technicians with bachelor's degrees earned about $27,000 per year. A master's degree earns around $32,000 per a year. Salary increases can be common. A professional who earns less that $30,000 today could reasonably expect a $40,000 increase in the next few decades.
